SUMMARY:Increasing Access to Mental Health and Substance Use Care
DESCRIPTION:The Bowman Family Foundation (“BFF”) and its tax-exempt subsidiary\, the Mental Health Treatment and Research Institute LLC (“MHTARI”)\, focus on improving the lives of people with mental health and substance use (“MH/SU”) conditions by funding projects\, reports\, and the development of tools to increase access to MH/SU care. \n\n\n\n​​​​In our session on October 9th\, we will describe the range of BFF initiatives undertaken to improve access to timely\, affordable MH/SU care\, including: \n\n\n\n\nDevelopment of audit tools to evaluate MH/SU provider network adequacy and compliance with mental health parity requirements\n\n\n\nGeneration and dissemination of data highlighting disparities in access to MH/SU care\n\n\n\nUnderscoring the need for integrating MH/SU care into primary care using the Collaborative Care model (CoCM) and facilitating its broadscale adoption\, by:\n\n\n\n\n\nDevelopment of provider resources to help providers implement CoCM\n\n\n\nMaking policy recommendations to regulators\, payers\, employers and providers\n\n\n\nDemonstrating the impact of CoCM on patient outcomes\, Total Healthcare Costs and Suicide risk/rates\n\n\n\nShowing the impact of Medicaid coverage and payer reimbursement for CoCM on its adoption\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeakers: Matthias Bowman\, MBA and Michael Yuhas\, MA \n\n\n\nMatthias Bowman\, MBA | President of The Bowman Family Foundation \n\n\n\nFormerly a member of the Board of Directors of the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation\, the American Cancer Society Foundation\, the Sylvan C. This is a practical conversation on how to set peers up for success in real settings\, not a theoretical discussion.  \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Casey Copeland  \n\n\n\nCasey Copeland is the Director of Peer Services for the State of Arkansas and a Peer Support Peer Supervisor. He has held several key leadership roles\, including Director of APART\, Director of Rock of Hope transitional housing\, co-founder and president of The Copeland Foundation\, and Chairman of the Arkansas Peer Advisory Committee. Casey has helped design and launch statewide initiatives that strengthen peer support and improve access to substance use and mental health services across Arkansas.

SUMMARY:Treating Substance Use Disorders in the Collaborative Care Model
DESCRIPTION:Co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health conditions are common in the primary care setting.  Join us for this engaging webinar where we will highlight how CoCM can also help PCPs screen for\, diagnose\, and treat SUDs in primary care.  \n\n\n\nLearning Objective 1: Review best practices for screening and diagnostic criteria for SUDs \n\n\n\nLearning Objective 2: Discuss evidence-based treatment options for people living with substance use disorders (SUDs) \n\n\n\nLearning Objective 3: Discuss how integrated behavioral health models\, such as the Collaborative Care Model ( CoCM)\, can address co-occurring mental health disorders and SUDs in the primary care setting. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Jennifer Thomas\, MD\, FASAM  \n\n\n\nDr. Jennifer Thomas\, MD\, FASAM is board-certified in family medicine and addiction physician and currently serves as Medical Director of Integrated Behavioral Health at Morris Hospital in Morris\, IL. She completed her medical degree at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield\, IL in 2007\, and completed her family medicine residency at Hinsdale Hospital outside Chicago in 2010.  \n\n\n\nDr. Thomas practices in a community-based\, rural setting and is passionate about integrating behavioral health services into primary care. She completed the 2018 University of California Irvine Train New Trainers Primary Care Psychiatry Fellowship. As a leader in developing partnerships between academic research settings and community-based providers\, Dr. Thomas works closely with the University of Washington AIMS Center. Dr. Thomas serves as Project Lead for Morris Hospital’s partnership with the AIMS Center’s NIMH-sponsored research study CHAMP: Collaborating to Heal Addiction and Mental Health in Primary Care. As an advocate for increasing access to medication for Opioid Use Disorder\, particularly in rural settings\, Dr. Thomas was part of an inaugural cohort of 5 IL physicians supported by ISAM to become board certified in Addiction Medicine through the ABPM Practice Pathway. Dr. Thomas also serves as the National Medical Co-Director for Integrated Care at the Collaborative Family Healthcare Association. Dr. Thomas is also a Senior Fellow for Health System Integration at the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute.
