SUMMARY:Clinical Pathways in Collaborative Care Management
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will focus on the role of clinical pathways in implementing and growing a Collaborative Care Management (CoCM) program. Developing Clinical Pathways in CoCM allows primary care practices to better manage a population of patients with behavioral health diagnoses and offers a system to identify patients\, treat patients\, monitor symptoms\, adjust treatment as needed\, and track outcomes. Participants will leave the session understanding how to create\, utilize\, and optimize clinical pathways in their practice. \n\n\n\nSpeaker:  Virna Little\, Psy.D.\, LCSW-r\, SAP\, CCM \n\n\n\nDr. Virna Little is currently the Chief Clinical Officer and co-founder of Concert Health\, a national organization providing behavioral health services to primary care providers\, and the co-founder of Zero Overdose\, a not-for-profit addressing the national crisis of unintentional overdoses. She has a Doctoral degree in Psychology\, a Masters in Social Work\, and a Master’s in Business Administration and Healthcare\, is a Certified Care Manager (CCM)\, and is a recognized Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). Dr. Little is a nationally and internationally known speaker for her work in integrating primary care and behavioral health\, developing sustainable integrated delivery systems and suicide prevention. She is a faculty member for the national and international Zero Suicide initiatives and has spoken on national suicide prevention strategies at the White House. Dr. Little is a consultant providing technical assistance to organizations and states around the country integrating primary care and behavioral health as well as an expert on the Collaborative Care model and the implementation of depression care programs. Dr. Little has been recognized with awards from the Society for Social Work Leaders in HealthCare\, National Association of Social Workers\, Community Health Center Network of New York\, New York Suicide Prevention Committee and others. She has served on many boards including the New York Hudson Valley Chapter of the American Heart Association and the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved.

DESCRIPTION:This presentation will seek to provide a conceptual overview of how practitioners may evaluate the utility of specific digital tools and interventions within a particular healthcare setting and context. Review of digital therapeutics and other types of digital solutions to support population behavioral health will attempt to provide context on best practices and common pitfalls of attempting to implement digital solutions. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Scott Breitinger\, M.D. \n\n\n\nDr. Breitinger’s clinical work is focused on the management of psychiatric illness in the primary care setting through team-based care models. This clinical work serves as the foundation for problem identification\, hypothesis generation\, and solution iteration with his implementation and design work in healthcare. I build services and products that make mental healthcare more efficient and accessible\, often through better technology integration and improved alignment of stakeholder incentives. In his teaching roles\, Dr. Breitinger works with medical students and post-graduate medical trainees (residents and fellows) and provides continuing medical education to clinicians in the delivery of psychiatric services in the primary care setting\, innovation in care delivery\, and psychotherapy practice amongst other topics.

Dr. Shuler will explore the distinctive behavioral aspects and unique considerations for medical interventions across major drug groups such as alcohol\, cannabinoids\, dissociates/hallucinogens\, nicotine\, opioids\, sedative-hypnotics\, and stimulants\, shedding light on effective strategies for managing and overcoming addiction. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: James B. Shuler\, DO\, MS\, FACOEP\, FAWM\, FASAM \n\n\n\nDr. Shuler’s passion for addiction medicine arose from his own recovery from alcoholism over a decade ago. He began his training at Harmony Foundation and worked under and with several addiction medicine specialists in a variety of practices over the past 9 years. He is currently dual board-certified in Addiction and Emergency Medicine with a subspecialty fellowship in Wilderness Medicine. Dr. Shuler is the Medical Director for inpatient addiction treatment at the Foundry in Steamboat\, Colorado\, Mile High Recovery in Denver\, Colorado; and Medical Director for Thrivur Health\, an outpatient substance use disorder treatment clinic in Englewood\, Colorado. Dr. Shuler’s medical expertise combined with his experience in long-term recovery gives him a unique understanding of both the science and stigma of addiction.

Bernes\, MPH\, LMSW\, MBA \n\n\n\n​​Sarah A. Bernes is the Lead Clinical Training and Implementation Specialist at PRISM in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan. PRISM partners with health systems and payers\, providing individualized consultation and training to implement the psychiatric Collaborative Care Model (CoCM). Previously\, Ms. Bernes served as the Director of Training at Concert Health. In addition to integrated care\, Ms. Bernes is passionate about suicide prevention. Her work focuses on the impact of stress\, trauma\, and mental illness in the context of childbearing on caregiving and the developing parent-child relationship\, and how to support families in overcoming psychological and environmental adversity. She serves as Principal or Co-Investigator on multiple projects funded by the National Institute of Health\, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services-Administration for Children and Families\, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services\, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid in Michigan. She holds a doctorate in Medicine and master’s degree in Public Health\, and serves as the Medical Director of the Perinatal Psychiatry Program at Michigan Medicine in charge of perinatal clinical care delivery both within psychiatry as well as integrated within obstetrics\, family medicine\, and pediatrics. Additionally\, she is the medical director for MC3 Perinatal\, a state-wide perinatal access program to primary care\, public health nursing\, community mental health\, and other health providers. She is the co-director of Zero To Thrive\, a multidisciplinary initiative at the University of Michigan focused on promoting science\, increasing public awareness\, and developing and implementing programs and services to buffer risks and enhance resilience in young children under the age of 5. Within the scope of this work\, she has co-developed the Strong Roots Curricula\, a series of interventions for parents and other caregivers to foster caregivers’ reflective capacity and enhance their sensitive caregiving\, and ultimately\, to benefit the wellness and health of young children. In 2018\, she has co-edited the book Motherhood in the Face of Trauma: Pathways Towards Healing and Growth (Springer\, 2018). Dr. Muzik is highly published with over 140 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

DESCRIPTION:This webinar will provide an overview of the BHI Collaborative\, a collection of eight of the nation’s leading physician organizations\, and its collective efforts to empower physician practices to sustain a whole-person\, equitable approach to physical\, mental\, and behavioral health care for their patients and families. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Chris Botts\, American Medical Association \n\n\n\nChris Botts is the Senior Manager\, Care Delivery and Payment within the Professional Satisfaction & Practice Sustainability group at the American Medical Association (AMA). In this capacity\, he helps lead AMA’s efforts to advance new models of care delivery and payment that improve the sustainability of physician practices by removing obstacles to patient care and enabling physicians to learn\, adapt\, thrive\, and lead in a rapidly evolving healthcare environment​. This includes leading AMA’s Behavioral Health Integration Initiative and the BHI Collaborative\, a partnership between 8 of the nation’s leading physician organizations\, which are focused on catalyzing effective and sustainable integration of behavioral and mental health care into physician practices. \n\n\n\nPrior to joining the AMA\, he worked at the Health Care Reform and Innovation Administration within the District of Columbia’s Department of Health Care Finance designing and implementing new\, innovative health IT programs. These programs worked to improve data integration and provide actionable information to reduce health disparities\, enhance healthcare quality and outcomes\, and promote wellness in the District. Mr. Botts also worked at the Center for Health Policy (formerly known as the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform) at the Brookings Institution in Washington\, DC where he supported the Center’s payment and delivery reform initiatives including those related to Medicare alternative payment models and health plan innovations. Mr. Botts earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Neuroscience with a concentration in Premedical Studies from the College of William and Mary.

SUMMARY:Collaborative Care: Lessons Learned and Future Directions
DESCRIPTION:The AIMS Center at the University of Washington is a group dedicated to improving the health of populations by advancing the research and implementation of Collaborative Care (CoCM). Drawing from AIMS Center’s nearly 20 years of experience assisting diverse healthcare systems implement Collaborative Care for a variety of patient populations and conditions we will highlight lessons learned and look ahead to emerging areas for Collaborative Care. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Monica Harrison\, MSW\, LCSW \n\n\n\nMonica Harrison has been providing behavioral health services to individuals since 2003 in medical\, educational\, and community-based settings.  She also has extensive experience working with young children from her prior years of working with Head Start/Early Head Start programs.  Monica spent several years as a clinical leader working on teams in inpatient/outpatient behavioral health\, nephrology\, group homes\, specialty medical settings\, and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC).  Most recently\, Monica worked for a large hospital system with outpatient primary care clinics in Connecticut providing program building and leadership similar to her time at the FQHC\, starting their Collaborative Care service delivery. \n\n\n\nMonica Harrison has experience with training and implementation of evidenced-based Integrated Care models (Collaborative Care and Primary Care Behavioral Health).  Monica received her Bachelors in Early Childhood Education with a Special Education\, Birth through Kindergarten designation.  She also has a Master’s in Social Work from a joint program between a PWI (Predominately White Institution) named the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and HBCU (Historically Black College and University) named North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro\, NC.

SUMMARY:The Science and Stigma of Addiction
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will delve into the pervasive issue of stigma surrounding addiction\, highlighting its harmful impact on individuals and communities. It also explores the science of addiction\, offering insights into the neurobiological and psychiatric factors that underlie this complex condition. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: James B. Shuler\, DO\, MS\, FACOEP\, FAWM\, FASAM \n\n\n\nDr. Shuler has lived in Colorado since age 6\, growing up in the Fort Collins area.  He attended Colorado Timberline Academy in Durango for high school and after that became an MP in the United States Army.  He then returned to Fort Collins where he was self-employed in a couple of different ventures before attending College at Colorado State University where he did a double major in Botany and Zoology.  After graduating\, he attended medical school at Des Moines University where he also received a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration along with his Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine.  He then attended an internship and residency in Emergency Medicine at Michigan State University in Lansing\, Michigan.  He then returned to Colorado and practiced emergency medicine in a wide variety of emergency departments including locum tenens work in multiple states and started an urgent care business with other partners. \n\n\n\nDr. Shuler’s passion for addiction medicine arose from his own recovery from alcoholism over a decade ago.  He began his training at Harmony Foundation and worked under and with several addiction medicine specialists in a variety of practices over the past 9 years.  He is currently dual board-certified in Addiction and Emergency Medicine with a subspecialty fellowship in Wilderness Medicine.  He currently lives with his wife in Lafayette\, Colorado\, and has two girls\, ages 22 and 26\, and two stepchildren ages 23 and 28.  He is currently the Medical Director for inpatient addiction treatment at the Foundry in Steamboat\, Colorado\, Mile High Recovery in Denver\, Colorado\, and Medical Director for Thrivur Health\, and outpatient SUD treatment clinic in Englewood\, Colorado.  He was recently the Medical Director for Choice House/Lookout in Boulder\, Colorado. Additionally\, he has recently been a regional medical director for Front Range Clinics\, devoted to outpatient addiction treatment\, and currently works with the Denver Recovery Group\, another outpatient opioid addiction treatment (OTP) facility and has been the Medical Director for a couple of other OTP’s. \n\n\n\nHis hobbies include gourmet cooking\, as much travel as possible\, and a variety of outdoor activities in Colorado.

DESCRIPTION:This webinar offers primary care providers an introduction to Collaborative Care education and the Collaborative Care model (an evidence-based model to identify and treat patients with depression and anxiety in primary care). In over 80 randomized controlled trials\, Collaborative Care was found to be more effective than care as usual in primary care settings. Collaborative Care has also been established as a more cost-effective way to manage treatment in primary care. Participants will learn about the patient-centered and evidence-based care practices of Collaborative Care treatment. \n\n\n\nPresenter: Dr. Virna Little is the Co-Founder of Concert Health and the co-founder of Zero Overdose. She is an internationally known speaker for her work in integrating primary care and behavioral health\, developing sustainable integrated delivery systems and suicide prevention. Dr. Little is an expert in CoCM and provides technical assistance to organizations and states around the country integrating primary care and behavioral health.
