ABHIN’s Chief Executive Officer, Kim Shuler, LCSW, has been busy promoting suicide prevention this fall! In addition to attending American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) fall events and engaging AFSP to speak during ABHIN’s November webinar, Ms. Shuler was asked by the Arkansas Academy of Family Physicians to write an article on the importance of screening for suicide in primary care. Shuler writes, “Thirty percent (30%) of people who die by suicide visited a healthcare provider in the week prior to their death. At the same time, only 24% of patients are assessed for suicidal ideation. This points to a serious gap in clinical practice and population needs.” The article features excerpts from an interview with Dr. Jason Lofton and includes key resources for primary care teams to use as they develop new workflows for screening.
