The Bowman Family Foundation (“BFF”) and its tax-exempt subsidiary, the Mental Health Treatment and Research Institute LLC (“MHTARI”), focus on improving the lives of people with mental health and substance use (“MH/SU”) conditions by funding projects, reports, and developing tools to increase access to MH/SU care.  Shatterproof is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the addiction crisis in the United States.

The session held on October 9th highlighted the range of BFF and Shatterproof initiatives undertaken to improve access to timely, affordable MH/SU care, including:

  • Developing audit tools to evaluate MH/SU provider network adequacy and compliance with mental health parity requirements

  • Generating and disseminating data to highlight disparities in access to MH/SU care

  • Promoting the integration of MH/SU care into primary care through the Collaborative Care Model (CoCM) and facilitating its broadscale adoption by:

    • Developing provider resources to support CoCM implementation

    • Making policy recommendations to regulators, payers, employers, and providers

    • Demonstrating the impact of CoCM on patient outcomes, total healthcare costs, and suicide risk/rates

    • Showing the effect of Medicaid coverage and payer reimbursement for CoCM on its adoption

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Matthias Bowman, MBA | President, Bowman Family Foundation. Formerly a member of the Board of Directors of the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, the American Cancer Society Foundation, the Sylvan C. Herman Foundation and One Mind. Formerly Vice Chairman of Investment Banking at Merrill Lynch and Chief Executive Officer of Merrill Lynch Ventures and other private equity funds. Graduated summa cum laude from Williams College with a degree in economics, and as a Baker Scholar from Harvard Business School. Subsequently, studied molecular biology, neuroscience and biostatistics.

Michael Yuhas, MA | Advisor, Bowman Family Foundation. Founder of Integra ServiceConnect, a company engaging high-need individuals in their own communities.  Formerly, CEO of Health Integrated, an integrated managed care company, and an executive with Magellan Health Services. Masters degree in Clinical/Community Psychology from Temple University, with additional graduate training in Psychiatric Epidemiology completed at The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Kristen Pendergrass, MSW | Vice President, State Policy, Shatterproof. Formerly served in Pew Charitable Trusts; Oregon House Majority Office; Chief of Staff for Representative Tobias Read; Massachusetts House of Representatives. Master’s degree in social welfare policy from the Boston University School of Social Work.
